Summer Safety Tips

Summer Safety Tips

5 minute read

The days are getting longer and the temperatures are rising which means summer is upon us and it is the perfect time to get outside! As you begin to plan out your outdoor activities, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Your first thoughts are likely wearing sunscreen and drinking water, but it’s also important to be aware of your surroundings and consider your personal security.

Staying prepared and knowing how to prevent an emergency is key. However, it is also important to equip yourself with safety tools just in case you need them. Sometimes accidents and unexpected incidents still happen. We want you to be ready for anything! Check out these five common summer activities and our tips to safely enjoy them.

Launching Fireworks and Viewing the Show

Watching a dazzling fireworks show in the sky is a core summer memory. Whether you go to a large event or you are shooting off your own display at home, you should keep tips in mind:

  • Keep Your Distance: Make sure that anyone watching fireworks stays at least 30 feet away from smaller fireworks. If you are setting off larger ones - you should stay at least 100 feet away.
  • Have a Plan: Accidental fires can happen even when you’re careful. Be sure to keep a fire extinguisher or even a bucket of water near the area you are setting off the fireworks. This way you can put out any fires quickly.

Walks After the Sun Goes Down

Nothing beats a warm evening walk where the pavement still has heat coming off it from the summer sun. But it can be worrisome when it is harder to see in the darkness.

  • Make Sure You’re Seen: Wear bright or light colors like white to make sure you’ll be seen by cars passing by. You can also add reflective accessories.
  • Carry a Light: Bring along a stun gun flashlight like a Diablo 2! This tool can light your way and let others know you are there, but the additional stun gun feature is added protection to scare off wild animals and protect from other threats.
  • Take a Familiar Path: Walking at night isn’t the time to explore new areas. You should map out your route so that it’s in a location you are comfortable with and that is well-lit.

Cooking up Something Delicious

Who doesn’t love a good BBQ in the summer? Whether you are camping at your favorite park or enjoying your own backyard, you can practice safety and enjoy a tasty meal at the same time.

  • Light the Fire Right: Make sure your clothes and hair are not touching the grill and be careful about touching the grill to avoid burns. If your grill doesn’t have an ignition lighter, use a long-reach lighter created for grills or a jumbo match to light it.
  • Fire Safety: You should not use water to put out a grill fire because if grease is involved, the fire will spread instead of going out. Instead, make sure to keep a fire extinguisher, baking soda, or even sand near your grill to extinguish any accidental fires.

As Easy as Riding a Bike

Bikes can be used for transportation on beach vacations or taken on trails on your summer camping trip! They are a fun way to travel and are even more enjoyable when you’re prepared.

  • Wear Protective Gear: You should always wear a helmet when riding a bike in case of a riding accident, but you can also secure yourself with Pepper Spray for unexpected encounters. Our Instafire Xtreme Pepper Spray Sleeve is perfect for cyclists because it attaches to your hand so it’s always ready to use, without fear of dropping it.
  • Be Seen: Attach reflectors or glowing lights to your handlebars and back of the back so you can be seen, especially after dusk. You can also wear a reflective helmet or other accessories to help with this.

Taking Rideshares or Parking in Busy Lots

More events take place in the summer and you may find yourself traveling to new areas or even using rideshares to get to your destination. You can stay safe with these tips, even when you’re out having fun!

  • Stay in the Light: Make near lights or close to the elevator or entrance when possible. If you are waiting for someone to pick you up, make sure to wait under a streetlight or close to an open business.
  • Remain Aware: Pay attention to your surroundings in lots, garages, or busy streets. Make sure to look around often and scan the area while you are walking to your car or rideshare pickup point. You can even carry a security tool like our Harm and Hammer Pepper Spray for quick access in case you run into any issues.
