This month of April is the time to speak about Sexual Assault Awareness. Each one of us needs to spread awareness and educate others about this serious topic. Even as the day goes by, we shall never stop recognizing it. With the recent events that have taken place, it is more important than ever to stand up and speak one's mind against sexual assault. Anybody can be a victim of it, no matter their age, gender, race, or sexual orientation. Sexual assault is a major problem that needs to be addressed. With that, we must work together to create a safe environment for everyone. We hope that by the end of the blog, you will have a better understanding of what sexual assault is, its Warning Signs, Personal Protection, and how you can help spread awareness about this issue.
Based on NSVRC, the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 1 out of 5 women experienced sexual assault or attempted cases during their lifetime. 4 out of 5 cases were not reported to the police. Out of every 1000 rapes, 994 offenders will walk free. 81% of women and 35% of men experience depression, anxiety, and/or other mental health problems that relate to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder giving short- or long-term impacts. With these numbers, this is something that we should act on and put a stop to.
There are many ways we can work together to prevent sexual assault. One way is by Personal Protection. This means being aware of your surroundings and situations you may be in. Another way is by creating a safe environment for everyone. This includes speaking up when you see something that doesn't seem right and reporting any incidents of sexual assault. Lastly, we need to educate others about sexual assault prevention. This includes teaching children about consent and proper respect for others' bodies. We can also provide resources for survivors of sexual assault so they know they are not alone and where to get help. If we all work together, we can make a difference.
